while your body is functioning?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This experience is sometimes called <\/span><b>functional freeze<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and it is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a natural body response that helps, not hinders<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Functional freeze is not a weakness.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  It&#8217;s not a &#8220;mental block&#8221;.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  It doesn&#8217;t mean there&#8217;s something wrong with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>a clever defensive strategy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the body and brain use when we feel something is threatening and <\/span><b>we cannot immediately react with fight or flight.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This response, known as <\/span><b>freeze response<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exists in all mammals<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 from mice to humans.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When an animal believes it cannot escape or confront the threat, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it remains still to protect itself and assess the situation.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Humans have this exact same mechanism, only it&#8217;s not as overtly visible \u2014 because they can still move and speak, but <\/span><b>internally there is a &#8220;suspension of action&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that resembles a freeze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This state has been studied in science as <\/span><b>freeze response<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 that is, as part of how our nervous system regulates behavior under tension or stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; It&#8217;s as if the body is saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I keep my senses active. But I don&#8217;t jump before I understand what&#8217;s happening.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don&#8217;t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mean here is a <\/span><b>prolonged, non-adaptive freeze<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that occurs in extreme cases of trauma or severe anxiety and which can be dysfunctional in daily life.
